Heart rate variability — the beat-to-beat variation in your heart rhythm — is one of the more useful proxies available for autonomic nervous system balance, and specifically for how much your parasympathetic ("rest and recover") system is engaged relative to your sympathetic ("fight or flight") system. Higher HRV is generally, though not universally, associated with better recovery and lower physiological stress.
There's a plausible biological reason light exposure could touch this system. The same retinal cells that report brightness to your circadian clock also project into pathways connected to autonomic regulation. That's a real, documented anatomical connection — not a stretch. The open question is what that connection actually does to your HRV numbers in practice, and here the literature gets genuinely messy.
What the Studies Actually Found
A handful of small studies have looked directly at this. The findings don't point cleanly in one direction — which, to be clear, is itself useful information.


Why the Results Don't Agree
A few real factors are driving the inconsistency, and they're worth naming rather than glossing over:
Sample sizes are small. Most of these studies enroll well under 30 people. That's enough to detect a real effect worth investigating further — it's not enough to draw a confident conclusion about how light affects HRV in the general population.
Protocols vary enormously. "Light exposure" in one study means five minutes of gazing at a far-red source. In another, it means targeted, high-intensity photobiomodulation delivered directly to a specific area of the neck. In another, it's simply ambient colored room lighting. These are not the same intervention, and they shouldn't be expected to produce the same result.
Baseline psychological state seems to matter. More than one study found that light affected HRV differently depending on participants' existing anxiety or stress levels — meaning the same light exposure may do something different for a calm person than for a stressed one.

What's Actually Worth Doing With This
If you're already tracking HRV, light exposure is a reasonable variable to log out of curiosity — timing your morning light, noting whether an evening red-light session correlates with anything in your own data. Treat it as an N=1 experiment, not an expected outcome. The mechanism is plausible enough to be worth watching as more research comes out; it's not mature enough to build a claim on.
